Overcoming Lows

by Lynesha McElveen

I woke up yesterday in sort of a slump.  Life is going great.  Bills are paid.  Relationships are well.  Family is fine.  It was just one of those days I didn’t feel like doing nothing.  I know none of you have ever had any of those days.  Wink!  You know, those days when you just want to stay in the house, in the warmth of your bed, sip hot chocolate, and watch TV.

Part of this was because I’m a summer baby.  I thrive off the sunlight and heat and it was rainy and dark outside.  But a bigger part was I just didn’t want to do anything.  I had plenty of things I could have been doing, even more things I should have been doing, but just didn’t have a desire to do them.

This brought me to my thoughts for today.  What do you do when you don’t feel like doing anything?  How do you push through your feelings of “blah” to build your business?  How do you overcome laziness, boredom, or just plain stagnation?  As I sat there and pondered, I realized I didn’t have any cute strategies, or catchy phrases to help you through this, but to say, “Get off your butt, and PUSH.”

Don’t worry I’m talking more to myself than to you right now.  As a small business owner working on becoming a large business owner, I have no space for having too many “Do Nothing” days.  I can’t afford to take breaks because while I’m chillin’ someone else will come right along and take my place.  As Les Brown says, “You have to be willing to do the things today others won’t do, to have tomorrow the things others won’t have.”

With that, we have to ask ourselves, “What am I willing to do for the success of my business?  Am I willing to go without sleep?  Miss out on events?  Go without vacations?  Spend some extra time away from my family?  Spend my last dime because I believe so much in what I am doing?

I believe it’s what you do on those days you don’t feel like doing nothing that makes the difference.  I believe it’s the sacrifices we make now for the long run that will have a lasting impact.  I believe it’s the growth we’re willing to endure, learning about our flaws, challenges, and overcoming them.  Working when you don’t want to, not being afraid of failures, accepting criticism, rebounding from setbacks.  These are the things that set apart the good from the great!

 The question remains…Are you ready?
