The Importance of Self Development

By Lynesha McElveen

How many of us went to school, obtained a 4 year degree, maybe even a Master’s degree all for the benefit of getting ahead in life?  We tolled out thousands of dollars, some of us tens of thousands of dollars to which we are still paying back.  We were taught in order to get the job you want with the “good benefits” you had to get a “good education.”  While this may be true, how many of us have done things to educate ourselves beyond getting our degrees?  Don’t get me wrong, I am not opposed to formalized education (all the way), but I am opposed to people believing the only way they can grow is through going through a structured, formal, pre-conceived program and obtaining a degree, certification, or documentation.  I am talking about the way we are programmed to think that it is important for someone else to value our education, but don’t think it’s important to value it ourselves.

What I am talking about is the importance of continued self-development.  I came up with this topic after speaking with a friend who spoke of the many opportunities she takes advantage of to continue her personal development and often times has invited others who complained about the costs of the events.  Don’t get me wrong.  It’s not a question of whether they have the money.  They will often invest their money other places (like a new Gucci bag) but don’t see the value in investing in themselves.  This is a problem, since YOU are your biggest ASSET.  That’s right, YOU!  Not a career choice, house, or business.  You can lose all those things and start over and build them back up again, but only if you are equipped to do so.

It is high time we start investing in ourselves through attending conferences, seminars, and workshops.  We should be taking courses, reading books and listening to CDs and tapes.  Make your car a “University on Wheels.”  If there is a subject of interest to you, find out who the Guru is in that arena and look them up for educational opportunities in your area.  Find the “It Guy/Girl” and reach out to them for recommendations on the best products or services based on your interests.

I know I may have stepped on some toes, but I don’t care.  I love you all and I want us to all make ourselves a priority and invest in our futures.  You can’t be cheap when you are trying to be the best you and you can’t cut corners when you are striving to go to the top!
