Counting Up the Costs of the Holidays

IMG_10591-e1417605752477-768x1024[1]Hey Divas! Ok, so now that Christmas is over, have you taken any time to review your spending habits and assess the damage? I know many times during the holiday season, we tend to spend more than average. Whether it be for entertaining others by giving holiday parties, planning big dinners, buying outfits, or giving gifts; the holiday season can be a time of tremendous spending and unfortunately tremendous debt.

I encourage you to not be afraid, but to sit down and calculate out just how much money you REALLY spent. Include everything from gas for travel to that cute little New Year’s Eve dress you bought so you can “bling out!” I know it seems mundane and may even take away some of the fun of this season, but it will also give you a REALISTIC picture of your finances and EXACTLY what you are spending during this time of year.

After doing so, you may need to make some adjustments, especially if you finance a lot of this season with credit. Maybe next year you will opt to make gifts instead or give gifts that are under a certain amount, i.e. $20 or less. Maybe you will purchase your outfits on sale, discount, or thrift. You can always shop: The Discount Diva Thriftique on Facebook or Instagram where all merchandise is $20 or less (just wanted to throw that plug in there) Lol! Maybe instead of cooking the whole holiday meal, you will ask friends and family to each bring a dish. Maybe instead of getting last minute flights, you will plan early, buy your tickets to leave the week before the holiday or the day of to save money.

Maybe you will even decide, the season is not about bling or gifts and instead decide to be a gift to someone else through service. Volunteer to watch someone’s children, work at a homeless shelter, or offer to cook someone else a meal. This is what the season is really about anyways, right? LOVE!
