Bling-Bling: A Jewelry Buying Guide

By Lynesha McElveen

I know like a lot of people, my obsession is jewelry.  I often dreamed of the day I could get that 2 carat engagement ring, with pave’ diamonds all around it, not knowing what it cost.  When I found out I had another Birthstone (Alexandrite) one of the most expensive gems in the world, I had to have that too!  I immediately set out to find out how a girl like me could have all these little bobbles for less.  So what did I do…I began a hunt for the best bargains on jewelry that took me to little known places, and now I’m sharing these secrets with you.

  1.  Apparel Marts- The Atlanta Apparel Mart is a wonderful place to find jewelry for a 50% discount or more.  Apparel Marts also provide an opportunity to see unique and rare pieces of jewelry.
  2. Local Boutiques- Many times new or local artist offer jewelry for less, especially when first starting out in their careers.  Be open to negotiating with the designers to get what you want for the price you want.
  3. Black Friday Sales- Jewelry like many other items are often on sale around major holidays.  Black Friday is always a good time to shop for jewelry.  Avoid purchasing jewelry 1-2 days before the holidays, as prices may be marked up.
  4. Shopping Abroad- Surprise, surprise!  A lot of jewelry is less expensive overseas.  Try the Caribbean islands for gemstones,India for gold, andThailand for pearls.
  5.  Annual Trade Shows- You can find annual trade shows for jewelry can be a less expensive way to find often expensive pieces.  Shows are often held at local hotels.
  6. Pawn Shops- Pawn shops can be an incredible way to find jewelry for significantly less.  Be sure to ask for authentication and money back guarantees.  Although pawn shops great for gold, you can often get better deals on diamonds at a jeweler.
  7.  Thrift Shops- You would be surprised at the jewelry you can find at thrift shops.  Not only can you find great costume jewelry, but occasionally you can find gold, pearls, gemstones, and diamonds.
  8. Going out of Business Sales- These can be some of the best places to find jewelry, however, remember, if the store closes, you will have no recourse if an item breaks.  However, you can always insure the item through the purchase of an outside policy.
  9. Estate Sales- This can be fun for the adventurous at heart.  It requires some patience, but the rewards can be astronomical.  The benefits are because the person is looking to settle the estate, they are often willing to negotiate in price just go get rid of the items.
  10. Trendy Clothing Stores- I know most of us go to clothing stores for…clothes, however, you can often find unique, fun, exciting jewelry pieces at many of these stores and the great thing is, you don’t have to spend a lot to look like a million bucks!

Remember to be creative.  Look for jewelry in places you wouldn’t expect.  I have found some of my best costume pieces at beauty supply stores and 18KT gold pieces at flea markets.  Don’t be afraid to step outside the box.  You never know what you may find!   Happy Hunting!
